February 24th
Islanders Dominate
Kings
On Feb 24th the Isles played game 3 of a best of seven series against Comox. Before the game a small ceremony was held to award two trophies to Islanders players. Kiefer Smiley was awarded top goaltender, and captain Neil Doherty was awarded the unsung hero award. After the singing of the national anthem, the game started off fast, with end to end hockey. Greco began generated an opportunity early for the Islanders, followed by a tripping penalty. The Islanders had a good kill, with Kiefer Smiley standing strong. Just after the penalty was over, Comox took a penalty, and the Islanders began pounding shots at the net. Kerry Park took control of play, and only the Comox goalie held the score even. Just off the middle point, Balone laid a huge hit, knocking a Kings player off his feet as he was caught looking for a breakaway pass. The Islanders continued to pound shots at the net, as both Grant and Posey narrowly missed tallying the first of the game. With seven minutes left in the period, Trevor Greco scored the first goal of the game on a powerplay. Comox continued to take penalties, and the Islanders went up on a two man advantage. A goal was waved off by the ref as a penalty was called against Kerry Park. The Islanders second goal was scored by Jordan Grant on the rebound of a shot by Twan. With just over two minutes left in the period, Marshall picked up the Islanders third as he deked through the team and slid a soft backhand under the goalie. Another goal was waived off by the ref, and then with 43 seconds on the clock, Greco tipped a pointshot through the five hole. Comox picked up a penalty, and Twan scored a powerplay goal with 8 seconds left in the period. In an exciting second half the period, Kerry Park went to the room with a five to nothing lead.
Two minutes into the second period, Greco led a rush up the ice and beat the goalie for a hattrick. He went on to flatten a Comox player in the corner and helped keep the Islanders in control of the game. Five minutes into the second, a breakaway for Comox resulted in a penalty shot, but the player taking it shot high and wide. At the eight minute mark a penalty was called on a play that injured the Islander's Greco. He left the game with an injured shoulder. The Kings then took another penalty and the Islanders ninety second two man advantage. Balone scored a seventh goal for Kerry Park as he sniped the puck in the top right corner on the power play. Just after the halfway mark, Smiley robbed an almost assured Comox goal. The Islanders eighth was scored by Grant, and the nineth by Posey two minutes later. Kerry Park's tenth was scored by Bertuzzie, just seconds into a powerplay he created. With three minutes left in the period, Smiley made a low glove save on a tricky Comox shot. Posey picked up a penalty and Smily was called on to make three saves in quick succession to keep the Kings off the scoreboard. After the Islanders killed off the penalty, Bertuzzie got a breakaway, but received goaltender interfierence after hitting the goalie while out of control. Posey then found himself on a breakaway, but the Comox goalie closed the door. The Islanders went into the third leading 10-0.
The third started with Twan scoring his second of the night on a beautiful top corner shot on a breakaway. Kerry Park kept control, and five minutes in, Posey scored his second of the night with a top corner short handed goal. The king's Jordan Butcher final found the twine, scoring on a drive to the net. This effort was little too late as the Islanders easily defended their lead.
