Islanders Down 3 Games to 2

The Kerry Park Islanders and the Victoria Cougars went into game 5 tied at 2 games a each. Play hung around the neutral zone for the first minute as neither team could gain an advantage. Victoria had the first big chance of the game when a player in front of Smiley got the puck, but a shot wasn’t taken. Play didn’t stay in the Islanders end long, and Twan gave Kerry Park’s crowd something to cheer about as he flattened a Cougar behind their net.  Just seconds later, a goal for Kerry Park was waved off as Jamieson took an interference penalty. The Islanders were strong on the powerplay, and just a minute into the powerplay the Cougars took a penalty of their own.  The Islanders scored the first goal of the game as Mike Posey buried a pass from Trevor Greco. Victoria took another penalty and the Islanders received a two man advantage. Jamieson hit the post, and Grant was robbed by a beautiful glove save from Thompson, who deflected the puck high. The Islanders took more penalties, but remained strong on the penalty kill allowing few if any chances. With only 1:54 left in the period, Victoria tied the game. With a fast breakout from their end, they rushed up the ice and beat Smiley with a fast shot. The Islanders kept control for the last minute, and Victoria took a cross checking penalty for hitting Smiley.

The Islanders started the second period with style. Thirteen seconds in Trevor Greco sent Mike Posey a breakaway pass. Posey backhanded the puck over Thompson to finish the play, and Keifer Smiley received an assist. The Cougars retaliated with a goal of their own two minutes later as they beat Smiley with a clean pass on a  two on one.  Seconds later, Posey set up a play that generated a huge chance for the Islanders, but the shot was just wide. Five minutes in, Victoria got past Smiley with a top shelf shot on another two on one. Bertuzzie kept the crowd in the game with a huge hit on a Cougar at Victoria’s blueline. Seconds later, there was a brutal hit from behind by a Victoria player, and the Islanders rushed in to defend their teammate. Victoria received a two minute penalty and the Islanders went on the offensive. Smiley sent Twan a breakaway pass, but a Victoria back checker knocked the puck away before a shot could be taken.  With seven minutes left on the clock, the Islanders tied the game as Twan knocked in a pass from Young, with Shillito assisting. The Islanders almost buried the puck again thirty seconds later, and drew a penalty from the Cougars. The powerplay was unproductive for Kerry Park. The Cougars hit the crossbar with just under two minutes left on the clock. With just 0:16 seconds left Mike Posey striped a Cougar in Victoria’s zone, and drew a penalty.

Posey almost started the third period with another breakaway, but he was called offside on a pass at the 21 second mark. He got a breakaway seconds later, but was back checked by determined Cougars defense. Thompson kept the game tied as he made a huge save on a shot by Twan. The Islanders kept driving for a goal, but couldn’t bury the puck.  Smiley stayed strong in net for Kerry Park, but the Cougars slipped the winning goal past him with a backhand in front of the net. The Islanders kept generating chances, and Victoria provided them with ample powerplays, but Thompson stayed strong in net. Play by both teams flattened out as the period went on, and finally with 1:04 left in the game the Islanders pulled Smiley. Even with 6 skaters the Islanders had to play defensive with the Cougars almost getting a shot off at the empty net. Victoria won the game 4-3 after 3 periods of play.

Islanders Back in Series

After two losses at the start of the Victoria, vs Kerry Park series, the Islanders have struck back. On Saturday March 24th the Islanders went into game three trailing the Cougars 0-2 in the series. Victoria came out hard and for the first 6 minutes the puck stayed in the Islanders end.  The Cougars were the first on the clock as Smiley was beat on a play infront of the net. Not shaken Smiley gave the crowd cause to cheer as he robbed a Cougar of his breakaway shot.  Grant gave the Islanders their first big chance of the game as he sent the puck to the front of the Cougars net. The play stayed balanced for the next few minutes until Greco grabbed the puck on the Cougars blueline and walked through two Cougars before ripping a shot off.  With just over five minutes left in the period the Islanders went on the power play and were given the chance they needed and the Islanders pressed the Cougars hard. Just seven seconds after the man advantage ended Grant knocked in a rebound off a shot by Bertuzzie tying the game. A minute later the Islanders took a strange penalty, as Peters hit a Cougar while he had the puck, and was called for interfierence. Smiley continued to be the wall Kerry Park needed, and after two successful clears the penalty was killed off. There was a scrum behind the Kerry Park net after a Cougar went after a covered puck, and the Islanders took a penalty. Not shaken Kerry Park killed off the last minute of the period, and went into the second with the score tied.

Kerry Park started the second period with a man in the box, but they held Victoria off and went back to offense. Jamieson took an elbowing penalty early. While on the penalty kill Bryce Balone flattened Mike Hammond, and Keegan Young held up play in the Victoria end after a clear. Right after the penalty ended, the Islanders set up a two on one, and after a beautiful pass by Jamieson - Keegan Young buried the puck in the net. Smiley remained strong as the Cougars tried to come back, and Victoria took a holding penalty for their efforts. Kerry Park found the net again on the power play as Grant sent the puck to Macdowell on a 2 on 2, and Macdowell beat the Cougars goalie on the right post. Despite powerplay opportunities, the Cougars couldn’t get the puck past Smiley. The Islanders remained on the penalty for the better part of the last 12 minutes, but Smiley and the Islanders kept their lead. With 10 seconds left on the clock Greco danced through the Cougars line before taking a backhand.

The Islanders started the third in control of the game, and just two minutes in, they lengthened their lead.  Curtis Steacy knocked in a pass from Twan to pull the Islanders to a 3 goal lead. A minute later Smiley made a good cover when three Cougars were waiting in front of the net for a tip. Despite a penalty for too many men 5 minutes in, Kerry Park wasn’t slowed down. Greco tripped a Cougar while on his knees, and carried the puck down the ice before taking a shot. Macdowell knocked in the rebound, getting the only shorthanded goal of the night. An Islander fell on the Victoria goalie as he went in for a rebound, and a scrap started in the Victoria crease. A Cougar was ejected for instigating, and Macdowell was also ejected. Victoria came out with a two minute penalty. Just minutes later, Twan received a long pass, and soon after another fight had started. A Cougar was ejected, and so was Twan although he hadn’t dropped his gloves or his stick. The Cougars took to the power play, and Mike Hammond was forced to skate to the bench after getting hit by a clearing attempt from Kerry Park. Just before the halfway mark the Cougars took a too many men penalty, and Greco knocked in the Islanders 6th assisted by Grant and Shillito. For a couple minutes the Islanders had troubles breaking out of their end, but with a line change, Kerry Park went back on the offensive. With seven minutes left Grant was stopped on a breakaway, and Smiley robbed a Cougar on a subsequent Victoria breakaway. Less than a minute later another fight almost starts, and a player from each team went to the box. The Cougars kept shooting, and Smiley swept the puck out of the net after a shot left it sitting on the goal line. The Cougars had three big chances in a row following this, and Smiley was there every time. With 3:38 left the Islanders took a long shot, and after an odd bounce Grant knocked in the rebound. Just after Victoria took two penalties within 8 seconds of each other, and Kerry Park received a two man advantage. The Islanders kept play in the Victoria end, and controlled the remainder of the game. At the end of the game there was another brawl, but the refs cleared the players off the ice.
