Islanders Come Up Short Against Cougars

On October 21st the Kerry Park Islander matched up on home ice against the Victoria Cougars for the first time this year. The game started with a quick pace that sent the puck end to end fast. Just a minute and a half into the game, Victoria broke through the Islanders defense and scored. The Islanders regrouped and picked up the pace, but Victoria turned aside attempt after attempt the by Islander forwards. Late in the first period, the Cougars took a hitting from behind penalty that resulted in a 5 on 3 for Kerry Park. Kevin Shillito knocked one in for the Islanders and tied the game. The first period ended with the scoreboard reading 1-1.

Just after the open of the second period, a huge hit by an Islanders player knocked a pane of glass out in the opposing team’s end, but the delay did not distract Victoria from notching their second goal of the night just minutes later.  Kerry Park then took a penalty, giving Victoria a huge opportunity, but Mike Posey worked hard and single-handedly tied up the whole Cougars team in their own end for almost 30 seconds. The Islander then built on this energy and evened the score with a dramatic shorthanded goal scored by Keegan from his knees. Before the second period closed the Cougars scored twice more, making the score 4-2 Victoria.

The Islanders started the third period a man down, but tried to make up lost ground in the third period by going on the offensive. After killing off the penalty, the Islanders drove the play down to the Victoria end where Kevin Shillito got his second goal of the night. Islander penalties then allowed the Cougars a two-man advantage, but the Kerry Park defense managed to successfully kill it off. Trevor Greco (suspended) urged the Islanders on from the stands, setting up his own cheering section for the dying minutes of the game. With 7 minutes left, the Cougars got a breakaway and scored and just 20 seconds later the Islanders responded back with a goal of their own. Despite great effort by the Islanders, the Cougars managed to hold them back, and won their second match-up of the season 5-4.
