Islanders Dominant in Early Season Games

Sunday, the Islanders took to the ice with Wayne Twan rejoining the lineup. Twan was an important scorer and team player throughout last season and playoffs making his return an important addition to the team.

The first period got off to a slow start due to clock issues, but once resolved, the game quickly heated up as both teams faught for their first goal. Kerry Park went on a two man advantage and at 4:46 into the first they struck. Trevor Greco picked up a rebound and put the puck in the net. He was assisted on the play by Brady MacDowell and Curtis Steacy. The Islanders didn’t let up the pressure and within 5 minutes Trevor Greco found the net again after receiving a pass from Matt Oliphant. The goals kept pouring in for the islanders as just 2 minutes later Wayne Twan found the net, assisted by Brady MacDowell. Sooke responded with a shorthanded goal late in the first, but minutes later, Kiefer Smiley stopped a Sooke breakaway to keep the Islander lead and Curtis Steacy turned the foiled attempt into a breakaway for Sean Nugent that ended with a top shelf goal with 1:52 remaining in the period.

Kerry Park started the second with a 4-1 lead and Scott Jamieson added to it just 1 minute in, with Sean Nugent and Trevor Greco assisting in the play. The second period was action packed with both teams throwing bone rattling hits.  Keegan Young made another tally for the Islanders, closely followed by a goal by Scott Jamieson. The Kerry Park goalie made some brilliant saves and the defense managed to kill off a 2 minute 2 man advantage. Islander defenders killed off penalty after penalty, while generating chances for Kerry Park.  The period ended with the Islanders having a commanding 7-1 lead.

Kerry Park’s goaltending and defense remained strong throughout the third period, while the Islanders picked up two more goals. Sooke kept pressure on the Islanders net and Smiley turned away shot after shot. Sooke gained a 2 man advantage in the last 2 minutes of the game fighting desperately for another goal. However, the consistent Islander defense turned them away keeping the score 9-1.
