Islanders Start Where They Left Off

The Kerry Park Islanders won their season opening game of the 2006/2007 season against Comox Valley 12-2.  After winning the VIJHL Championship last season it was unknown how the Islander’s lineup would look for the 2006/07 campaign, but if the season opener is any indication, the team looks sound. The game heated up fast with the first goal for the Islanders hitting the back of the net under 3 minutes into the game, as Mike Posey scored his first goal of a 5 point night, giving the islanders a measure of control early. Scott Jameson put the Islanders second goal in the net 5 minutes later starting his 4 point game and Brady McDowell also had a strong opening to the season with 5 points on the night. Trevor Greco had three assists and went on to score Kerry Parks third goal, while Keegan Young had 2 goals and an assist over the course of the game. The Islanders came out of the first period with a lead of 5-1 setting a quick pace.

In the second, Kerry Park opened fast and didn’t give up the advantage they had gained in the first period. Comox was struggling to keep pace, but fought back hard. Kerry Park broke through the Comox defense and scored their 6th goal at 2:36 into the period and Travis Peters got his opening goal of the season. Kerry Park faced many penalty kills including two 5 on 3’s, but managed to allow Comox only 1 goal. The Islanders finished the period leading 8-2.

The third period was action packed with Comox pushing hard to keep the puck out of their net and the Islander trying to keep it there. For all of their efforts, Comox couldn’t stop Adrian Jack’s top shelf goal 7 minutes into the period. Brady McDowell showed great physical presence throughout the game, igniting the crowd and keeping Comox on their toes. Kerry Park didn’t let up and kept pouring shots on the Comox goalie. With just over four minutes left in the game, 16 year old Jordan Grant got his first ever Junior B goal and did it with style, hitting the top shelf. This was the last goal of the game for the Islanders and brought the score to 12-2 for Kerry Park.
